NIGERIAN WOMAN GIVES BIRTH ON BRITISH AIRWAYS FLIGHT FROM ABUJA TO LONDON
It was mixed feelings for passengers and cabin crew of a British Airways aircraft flying from Abuja to London when a pregnant woman on board went into premature labour at 26 weeks.
The 30-year-old Nigerian woman was said to 26 weeks into her pregnancy went into premature labour with the plane at 36,000 feet up. This resulted in the pilot diverting to Palma de Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands.
Dailymail reports that she gave birth in the business class section of the boeing 777 plane with 296 passengers on board. Mother and baby were raced to hospital once the plane touched down in the island. Under British Airways regulations, pregnant women can fly on their planes until the end of their 36th week, or 32nd week if carrying more than one baby.
A spokesman for British Airways said..
‘Our cabin crew, who are trained in birthing procedures, assisted with the delivery of a baby on board our flight from Abuja.The Captain diverted the aircraft to Palma so that mum and baby could be taken to hospital.
We are in touch and will continue to provide any support and help we can.We wish the mother and her little one all the very best.’ The delivery caused the airplane to arrive the United Kingdom 2 hours late.
